A running slump happens when you are no longer excited to get out running each day that your plan suggests (you’ve got a running plan yeah? If not, get in touch to get sorted!)

Typically, a running slump is when you feel like you should and could go for a run, but don’t actually want to. And if you do push yourself out of the door, it’s like you are just putting one foot in front of the other, rather than getting any joy, either during the run or after you finish. The first step to getting out of your running slump is to figure out what caused it in the first place.

      The main causes are:

      • Too much running with a break
      • Overtraining, under-recovery
      • No goal, especially after a race
      • Life stress becoming too much
      • After returning from injury

      Some solutions to try:

      • Take a couple of weeks off running (I do this every six months for myself and all my athletes)
      • Less intense training, less days per week and more sleep.
      • Set a new goal
      • Keep going – give it time to pass
      • Mix up your training – try something new
